Electrical Permits Effective July 16, 2007 all (*) new installations will require an electrical permit, issued by the BC Safety Authority. In the past, installations with less than a $200 limit on wire, conduit and electrical supplies did not require an electrical permit, although a "No Charge Permit" declaration was to be filed with the BC Safety Authority. When you decide to invest in a new security system, please make sure that your alarm contractor posts a declaration and calls for an inspection. Although it is highly unlikely that an electrical inspector will ever inspect the system, they will ask to see one on new construction while inspecting other electrical installations. If your alarm service contractor indicates to you that "We don't need one because...", they are WRONG! DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THESE TRUNK SLAMMERS! This is a sure sign that they are trying to pull a fast one or they are not licensed contractors! Make sure that they post a declaration and call for an inspection. Follow up on the permit and make sure that the permit number is on the declaration before they leave. The declaration must be posted by the equipment in a conspicuous place. Some alarm companies have been known to charge for the permit and never obtain one as the electrical inspector never comes to inspect the system. Be aware of this scam! (*) The only exception to the rule may possibly be a wireless system with a plug in transformer. |HOME| |
