OUTDOOR SECURITY "Your First Line of Defense"

At best, outdoor security systems are the most difficult of all security systems to install, yet they offer a high level of protection if installed correctly. That is the key word; correctly. Outdoor security systems require a completely different level of skills to install and maintain that unless properly trained, most alarm and security companies should stay clear of any attempts at this type of specialized security. Whether you are trying to keep someone in or out, every aspect of the installation must be engineered and installed to manufacturers specifications, or they will not perform as intended.

Outdoor sensors face challenges not found in indoor security situations. Environmental conditions such as temperature extremes, rain, snow, animals, blowing debris, seismic effects, terrain and traffic must all be taken into account. When functioning under these conditions, the system must maintain a high "Probability of Detection" (PD) while minimizing false alarms and nuisance alarms, both of which can reduce confidence in the security system's performance.

A quality outdoor security system shows an early return on investment by reducing the risk of theft, damage or personal injury. Remember, a fence alone does not absolve you of liability if an intruder were to get hurt on your property! You may still face a liability charge even though the actions or intent of the person involved was criminal!

FENCE SYSTEMS (AKA CUT AND CLIMB SYSTEMS)

There are two basic types of fence systems. The most economical for small to medium sized installations are the copper or co-axial cable installation.  These systems offer the lowest cost per lineal foot of fencing, depending on the level of protection you require.  For larger sites laser and fiber optic systems offer the greatest distances.

Fence systems of any type require that the fence be in near perfect condition. Loose fabric, support poles, cross-members etc will all require maintenance before a fence detection system can be installed. The fence must also be clear of tall grass, growth such as blackberry bushes and tree branches must also be cleared well away from the fence.

PHOTO-ELECTRIC BEAMS

Typically "beams" are good for protecting distances of up to 660 feet (each) (depending on the manufacturer) point to point.  These devices are labour intensive to install, have limited detection and are easily compromised by an intruder on foot.  They are excellent if installed in a "covert" manner or for detecting the movement of vehicles.  These are best installed when complimenting other systems or for protecting area's that cannot be protected with a fence system.

BURIED SENSORS

Buried sensitive cable or fiber-optic cable is placed just below the surface of the area to be protected.  This system is the ultimate in covert detection as there is nothing to be seen.  The cable detects anyone passing over the cable.  These systems are best used for estates and large private residences where esthetics are a high priority.

OUTDOOR MOTION

There are several outdoor motion detection systems available on the market today with ranges from 50 feet to 1500 feet.  Extreme planning is involved when utilizing these systems as there are site pre-requisites involved as to grade levels and materials.  Expect site preparation if this type of system is required.

WHAT CAN WE PROTECT?

Storage Yards, Vehicle Compounds, Fuel Storage Facilities, Radio / Cellular Sites, Water Treatment Plants and Storage Sites, Hydro Electric Sub-stations, Airports, Individual Aircraft, Military Installations, Embassies, Prisons, Natural Gas Facilities and pipeline installations, Borders, Docks and Ports, anything that requires action to be taken should unauthorized access be attempted.

REQUEST A QUOTE

If you would like a quotation for an outdoor security system for your facility, please obtain or make an accurate drawing of the site plan indicating:

  • Length of fences either in Meters or Feet, but please be as accurate as possible.
  • Gates: Swing; dimensions and swing in or out
  • Gates: Rolling; length
  • Fence height
  • Fence topping such as razor wire or barbed wire
  • Grade topping: Asphalt, concrete, gravel
  • Building locations and dimensions
  • Special concerns such as sensitive site areas
  • Hazardous areas
  • Site elevation changes

It would be helpful if a complete set of digital pictures were submitted with the site drawings so that we have a better understanding of the grade elevation (if any) as well as the overall condition of the site. In order to determine the threat level or risk, it would be helpful to know the type of assets the system is required to protect. This factor assists us in determining not only the level of protection for the fence system, but assists us in determining if multiple phases or levels of protection are required in specific area's or throughout the facility.
